Fatigue and Failure

Methods and insights for predicting fatigue and fracture in engineering structures

Fatigue and Failure

The session “Fatigue and Fracture” at the MPA Conference 2026 focuses on recent advances in the assessment and prediction of structural integrity under cyclic and extreme loading conditions. Contributions address fatigue life & fracture evaluation of various engineering components, with particular emphasis on welded joints and their complex behaviour under service conditions.

Last year, special attention is given to modern approaches for the characterization. E.g. scanning of welded topologies, enabling more accurate representation of geometrical imperfections and their influence on fatigue performance.  Nevertheless, this session also includes talks on the assessment using fluid-structure-interaction. In addition, the session covers fundamental and applied aspects of fracture mechanics, including crack initiation, propagation, and the determination of fracture toughness.

By combining experimental, numerical, and data-driven methods, this session aims to provide a comprehensive platform for discussing innovative strategies to improve durability, safety, and reliability in engineering structures.

The covered topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Fatigue life assessment and fracture evaluation of engineering components

  • Behaviour and performance of joints and structures under realistic service conditions

  • Advanced characterization methods

  • Influence of geometrical imperfections on fatigue performance

  • Fluid–structure interaction approaches in structural assessment

  • Crack initiation, propagation, and fracture toughness in modern fracture mechanics

Join us for an interesting session with lots of insightful presentations from renowned experts, engaging panel discussions and workshops, networking opportunities with peers in the field and possibilities to explore cutting-edge modeling techniques and applications.
